Lesson 1,
Topic 1
In Progress
Speed
Speed
From the standpoint of Positive Reinforcement training, you will reinforce only fast performance and ignore slow performance. The trouble might be that the dog gets discouraged from the lack of reinforcement.
In Double-reinforcement System, we will use the leash as negative reinforcement.
- You will give the command and apply gentle pressure on the leash (not harsh but strong enough for the dog to want to stop it). If the pressure is too harsh, the dog may shut down and not perform at all.
- The instance the dog sits, the pressure goes away first.
- You will mark.
- Reinforce.
The dog will be compelled to stop the pressure as soon as possible and will sit faster.
Example of a training session working on a slow sit per instructions above. The reason you see the Handler also use Opposition is that the dog hovers. We cover hovering in a different section.
A point of improvement for the Handler is to release leash pressure before marking and reinforcing.
