Latency. Slow Response to the Command
Latency – Slow Response to the Command
The method below must be used when the dog understands the concept of Stand out of Motion but the latency is still high. We recommend of course to reinforce only quick stops (you will need a mirror for that). This is Positive Reinforcement.
We also recommend an Assistant with a leash. When the dog is still in the learning phase, the assistant will apply Negative Reinforcementwith the leash as soon as the command STAND is given. Once the dog stops, the leash pressure goes away. We then mark and reinforce.
In the instance that the dog understood the behavior but it started to deteriorate, we need to use Punishment (does not mean to be very harsh or hurt the dog). We need a consequential event that reminds the dog that he does not want to continue walking after the command – for instance, a leash pop. The Handler will give the command and if the dog does not stop immediately, the Assistant will apply a leash pop.
If you work by yourself, you can use a Flex Pole. Please mark carefully on the ground where the pressure begins on the leash. Right before that location, you will give the command STAND and the Flex Pole will apply the pressure.
