Step 2 – A Few Steps Backward

  • We will now increase the dog’s drive and use a small tug pillow.
  • We will place it 1.5 meters (5 feet) out in front of the dog.
  • We will have a similar pillow under our arm.
  • The Handler will be positioned a step or two behind the dog.
  • Follow the same steps as in the First video and either send the dog to the pillow on the ground or get him into the Basic Position.

If the dog is not focused on the pillow on the ground – release him to it more often or make it hard for him to get it – we need focus and drive.

As you can see, while the dog is backing up, Anna keeps continuous leash pressure until the dog finds the Basic Position. Then the leash pressure is released, she marks and reinforces.

It will take a little time for the dog to get used to backing up straight. In the beginning, you can notice he veers left or right. This will improve with time. We recommend you stay with the distance of a couple of steps for quite a while until the dog is convinced that you will always be there.

If need be, you can use a physical barrier to help him back up straight.
