Hovering

Hovering

As you can see, the dog is hovering above the ground during a sit. It appears that somehow the dog learned to sit improperly. It could have happened that the lease pressure was released too soon. Sometimes, the dog is so keen on reinforcement that he hovers in anticipation.

We will Opposition Reflex to help with hovering.

  • Place the dog in a sit position.
  • Apply strong and steady pressure on the leash.
  • The dog will fight against the pressure and will position his bottom on the ground.
  • You stop the pressure when you can tell the dog is pulling against or the bottom is on the ground.

The rest of the session you see training in Level B. When the dog does not do well without Negative reinforcement we go back to it.

Of course, it is always a critical matter of timing and dosage (not to pull too hard or not hard enough, pull too late and release too soon or too late). The Handler cannot proceed to work out of Basic Position until it works great while backing up.
